The first thing we need to make clear is that this is a boot designed to improve your shots, while offering a good fit and without being excessively heavy. With this in mind, let's begin.
Nike Phantom
Previous generations of Phantom inherited the Flyknit we saw in earlier Mercurials, a thin, stylish knit that was very pleasant and comfortable from the outset. Now we have a more structured boot with two layers covering the shell, and even more so with the return of Ghost Laces technology covering the lacing, something I personally liked and am happy to see back.
In terms of touch, it is not as subtle and clean as in the previous generation, but is slightly sturdier and has greater grip. A step forward in the concept of the boot as such.
Regarding fit and comfort, both boots are comfortable, but the upper of the new Phantom GX is slightly more mouldable and soft, which means it doesn't provide as much support during lateral movements but is slightly more comfortable.
Therefore, if we want a slightly firmer and stiffer boot, perhaps the older Phantom GT II boots are a better option. If we are looking for the most comfortable option in this style of boot, the new Phantom Gx boots are a step forward.
There are also significant changes to the sole. Previously, we had a sole that, like the Flyknit, was very reminiscent of previous generations of Mercurial, with laminated studs and a semi-modular distribution.
However, now we return to a sole more similar to what we saw in Phantom Venom, with conical, laminated studs and greater flexibility.
In conclusion, we have two boots that are similar in shape and aim to give us the best feel when striking and touching the ball. And in this comparison, the clear winners are the new Nike Phantom Gx. The previous Phantom GT II are very similar to a wide version of the Nike Mercurial, which is not a bad thing at all, but the new generation is closer to the concept that this boot should give us. Therefore, if we are looking for a lightweight, reactive boot with some touch reinforcement, the previous generation will be the best choice. However, if we want a new touch, lots of grip and comfort, the new Nike Phantom GX boots are the best choice.
