The 1976/1977 season was a historic one for Atlético de Madrid, who won the league title for the eighth time in their history. The team coached by Luis Aragonés won the title on the penultimate matchday of the championship, after a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. On 15 May 1977, a first-half goal from Rubén Cano was enough to secure the league title at the home of the eternal rivals.
Much of the credit for that league was due to the defensive solidity shown by the team, which ended with Miguel Reina winning the Zamora Trophy. People like Luis Aragonés and recently Simeone, both players and coaches of Atletico Madrid, cemented their legend: feeling and rebellion. Atléticos always stand up for themselves. That has earned them the respect of all other clubs, making their fans one of the most loyal in all of Spain.
