You might be reading this post as if it was just any other adidas boot. Every day we get more launches and we don't get too surprised. You don't even comment your impressions because you know that in a few weeks there will be another launch. I get it. But please, this time don't pass on this launch. The new adidas Gloro is a lot more than the past launches: it's the first step on the big revolution that adidas is preparing for 2015.
What fo they want to achieve in the market with the new Gloro? At first, some people thought it'd be the Copa Mundial II, but don't worry, adidas Gloro, is not going to replace the Copa Mundial. It's just about filling a real need: to give a solution to todays classic player. We will hear that the adiPure is a classic boot, but lets be honest, the adiPure is way to modern for a classic player.
You might think that adidas already has a classic boot: Copa Mundial, Why do they want another one? They key here, is to know the difference between two terms, vintage (adidas Copa Mundial) and Retro (adidas Gloro):
- Vintage boot (Copa Mundial). This term goes straight to the past, a boot that was designed and created in the period to which the style belongs. The Copa Mundial has been designed the same way since 1982, everyone loves it, but today's classic players need something more.
- Retro boot (adidas Gloro). This boot reminds us to the past but does not belong to it. It features a design and construction from a different period but with today's technologies trying to appeal to our nostalgia... And the Gloro has done it.
Now that we are in context, I'm going to explain what Gloro is all about so you realize the super boot we have here. First thing I have to mention are the materials. Adidas has separated the boot in two parts: one is going to be the toe box area in touch with the ball and the other is the area that will fit the foot.
The Toe box area features a super soft kangaroo leather. The last time a saw s material as soft as this one was with the first and second generations of the adiPure. And it's really important that it's like this, because this area is the one in charge of getting in contact with the ball and it's the area that has to stretch to the shape of your foot and resist the pressure during it's use.
The other area is the heel counter. This area is going to be in charge of fitting the foot and giving it support. It cannot stretch or bend. That is why adidas has chosen to use a high quality synthetic microfiber that will fit the boot to the foot and will reduce weight making it lighter than usual classic boots.
If the chassis is a combination of Copa Mundial y adiPure, the silhouette has a more defined style. The PU outsole from the Copa Mundial is charming and iconic, but when it comes to functionality, the new boots beat it. And the adiPure outsole with the ConfortFrame Technology is a reference. This outsole puts the studs in pairs that are part of a base, and what it does is distribute the weight through all the plate the same way.
And I'm going to finish with my favorite part: the tongue. In the present day, a folded tongue seems too primitive. It kills me when I see younger players cutting out the tongues of their boots. In the 90', to place the tongue the right way, with an elegant move and the perfect length was a huge deal for a futballer. David Beckham made it a piece of art. And with the adidas Gloro we get it back. And we not only get it back but it is a big deal because we get the elastic band to make it stay in its place. This was a regular element in the Predator line 10-15 years ago.
And because of all of this is whay I conside that the Gloro is not just another football boot launch. It's the birth of a non temporal boot that will stay in the adidas collection for a long time and that will be part of the big revolution that adidas is preparing for 2015.
