There was a successful European campaign in which the Nerazzurri once again reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, falling to Real Madrid, but their domestic performance did not quite match their continental exploits. Despite having a solid core of Italian internationals and great foreign stars such as Liam Brady and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Inter finished sixth in Serie A.
