Ever since adidas took the reins in 2001 and was given the opportunity to sponsor the Champions League through its match balls, the design of these balls has evolved in line with technological advances in the world of football, whilst always keeping their core philosophies very much alive. Today we are going to present the Champions League match ball for the 2020–2021 season.
Almost every year, the colours and designs have changed, with white predominating in all of them. This year will be different: a mix of colours will feature during the group stage, taking over the best stadiums and appearing on the jerseys of teams across the continent. The design of next season’s ball aims to break with the monotony that has characterised Champions League footballs throughout history. Whilst last year’s ball featured white hexagons and blue stars in the group stage and red stars in the knockout stages, the tables have now turned. The hexagons will now be multicoloured, whilst the stars will remain white.
ISTANBUL 2020 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BALL
This will be the new colour of the UEFA Champions League Official Match Ball, which the German brand adidas will introduce during the first stage of the 2020 Champions League.
One of the inspirations behind this design is the mix of colours found in the kits of all the Champions League teams, particularly during the first group stage, when all the teams are in action. The passion with which the players compete in every match of this competition is key for adidas, and this is reflected in the new 2020 Champions League ball. We can see that this new Champions League ball features distinct zones; the competition’s signature stars, where the colour of the ball has been inverted, with prominent markings printed in the main colour, designed to highlight the iconic Champions League stars. Technologically, this ball is somewhat of a continuation of previous models, characterised by a thermally sealed, seamless surface. Its design has been optimised to give players more precise control and to prevent water absorption. The change from last year’s design lies in the finer details, where the stars are slightly overlapped.
It’s clear that, year after year, adidas shows us just how imaginative they are, bringing us innovative and groundbreaking designs.
What do you think of this new colourway for the new Champions League ball?
