First of all, we’d like to point out that we’re all different and will make different choices; therefore, just as with football boots, we’ll often come across unusual cases. When it comes to football shin guards, we might see a tall, large player wearing shin guards that look small to us, and another, shorter player wearing very large ones. This comes down to each player’s preference and comfort, and is therefore a personal choice; however, it is always advisable to choose shin guards that fully cover the shin area – remember, this is one of the areas most prone to taking knocks during a football match.
How do I choose the correct size?
The first thing to bear in mind is that the area the shin guard should protect is the middle section of the tibia, that is, about 5 centimetres from the tibial tuberosity – or from where the knee ends, which is where the tibia begins – and then between 5 and 10 centimetres from the ankle, depending, of course, on the width of the ankle and whether or not we are wearing an ankle brace.
As we can see in the photo, there is a gap at the top and another at the bottom, and the shin area is completely covered, which will therefore prevent us from sustaining injuries in the area covered by the protection.
What if I have wide or thin legs?
Another point of contention that, fortunately, Sak Project’s shin guards resolve in one fell swoop, as they offer three different widths of shin guard for every shin or tibia length.
This means we have a product to suit all leg types, so the area covered will be greater, we’ll be more comfortable, and we’ll be able to forget about those annoying problems that arise when we don’t choose the right shin guard.
Different ways to use the shin guards
Once we’ve chosen the size, we can look at different ways of wearing them; sometimes we see players like Dybala who wear them extremely low, or players who wear them very, very small.
Personally, we DO NOT RECOMMEND using other players’ tactics, as this may leave areas unprotected. However, as long as the area mentioned above remains protected, we can play however we like – with short, long, or whatever style suits us best.
And that, in a nutshell, is how to choose the right size of shin guards. Remember to measure the shin area carefully, check each brand’s size guide to clear up any doubts, and choose the correct width – with shin guards such as those from Sak or Nike, which come in different widths depending on the model you choose.
