It’s true that the new Puma Ultra football boots bear many similarities to the previous generation, but it’s equally true that the changes the German brand has made to these new boots are significant. Today we’ll take a look at all those changes and give our personal opinion on whether the Puma Ultra really is an improvement in this new generation.
Let’s start by looking at the features that remain unchanged in this new generation. One of these is the outsole; Puma has decided not to alter the outsole of the Puma Ultra football boots, and we don’t think that’s a bad thing. The stud plate on this model features aggressive, laminated studs that meet the needs of the Ultra footballer. Traction during acceleration and braking, and stability at top speed – that’s what players looking for this model want, and that’s exactly what this sole offers.
Let’s continue discussing the similarities between the two generations and move on to the upper. The knit fabric takes centre stage here, and it makes perfect sense. The Puma Ultra is a very snug-fitting football boot, so in certain areas we need stretchy materials to reduce the feeling of pressure and make the boot more comfortable. That is exactly what the knit is for, and the truth is that it does exactly what is required of it. Speaking of this area, Puma has retained laces on the new generation of Ultras, giving us extra adjustability so we can tighten them to the level that feels most comfortable.
Next, we’ll discuss what’s new about these latest Puma Ultra boots compared to their predecessors, and that is none other than the upper. The German brand has unveiled a boot that is far more minimalist than the previous generation, and you can tell just by picking it up. This upper is made from a synthetic microfibre, very different from the mesh used in the previous generation of Ultra, and that is one of the main reasons for this weight reduction. The material is much thinner, and in certain parts of the upper we can even see light shining through the boots, which has both positive and negative aspects.
The good news is that the boots feel infinitely lighter to wear, and this, combined with the fit of these new Ultra boots, delivers exactly the feel that speed boot wearers are looking for. On the other hand, when in contact with the ball, we lose the structure that the previous Ultra boot shell provided, which is why this new release has attracted a wide range of opinions to suit all tastes.
Finally, we’ll talk about the design of these Puma Ultra football boots. Puma has taken a step forward with this new Ultra design, as the German brand’s speed range finally has the personality that this type of boot demands. What’s more, the colour chosen for the launch of this new generation couldn’t be more spot on; although we’ve seen it before, these shades still look absolutely brilliant on this type of football boot.
These are the differences and similarities between the last two generations of the Puma Ultra; it’s now up to you to decide which boot best suits your needs.
Father's Day is coming up, and let's be honest: another tie isn't going to improve his style in the stands. If your dad is one of those who lives and breathes football 24 hours a day, the best gift is one that reflects his passion from the moment he wakes up until he arrives at the stadium.
