Our Christmas Clinic in Zaragoza led by Adrián Sanguino

Today we interview Adrián Sanguino, coordinator of our Futbol Emotion Academy goalkeeper training school in Zaragoza, coordinator of the Christmas clinic we recently held, and responsible for various training successes in recent years.

Adrián, what does being a goalkeeper coach mean to you?

What a great question! I would say it's a way of life. At the end of the day, both professionally and athletically, I'm surrounded by goalkeepers 24 hours a day. When people tell me, ‘Try to disconnect,’ it's simply impossible. It's a habit that starts as soon as you wake up, and as for finishing... Let's just say it takes a back seat!

What is your sporting background?

I would emphasise youth football. Regardless of being in categories such as 1st RFEF, 2nd RFEF and 3rd RFEF, the Football Emotion Academy is perhaps the one that gives me that ‘pill’ that every goalkeeper coach needs.

From your perspective as coordinator, how would you rate the Christmas Clinic held in Zaragoza?

Many of them are repeat participants from previous editions and know the dynamics of the training sessions, but we were pleasantly surprised by the students' enthusiasm for work. The quality of the sessions was excellent. When we finished, the entire coaching staff discussed it and the evaluations were very positive. Keeping up the pace of work until the last day (when energy levels are flagging) was a turning point.

How was the structure and the work carried out at the Clinic? Tell us the ins and outs so we can get to know the Zaragoza venue better.

We have many events behind us, and each coach knows what role to play. We are privileged to have different personalities in sports teaching, and I think that adds value to the Clinic. Ultimately, we seek a balance between work and enjoyment combined with competitiveness. Respect for teammates is the key point that must be emphasised in all tasks. With that in place, we have a lot to gain.

During your career, you have coached at clubs with different levels of ‘professionalism’. Is there much difference in grassroots football in this regard?

There is a difference. Ultimately, you don't have the resources or internal structures that a professional club has. What we must promote is professionalisation in grassroots football. To do this, you need to have qualified people. I'm sure they exist, but you have to know how to look after them, which, in my opinion, is often not done.

What is the most important stage in training a goalkeeper in terms of basic technical and tactical fundamentals?

All of them. From the pre-junior stage to the youth stage. Training does not stop even after completing the aforementioned stages. Each stage has its charm. And seeing them progress is the greatest reward.

Adrián, speaking of training, how would you define yourself as a coach? How do you like your training sessions to be in our technical training sessions?

Demanding. Very demanding, but on myself. I make the most of the time, with passion and intensity. It's very tiring, but at the end of the session it's very rewarding. Ultimately, you have to adapt to the groups depending on their level, their personalities, etc. They themselves express their needs; you just have to know how to recognise them.

How has the start of the season been at Futbol Emotion Academy for goalkeepers, which you coordinate in Zaragoza?

Very nice, like all of them. The beginning is when you see each other again. And that's a joy. When the season ends, you leave with a certain melancholy that you don't feel in professional football. In the end, it's an educational experience, both athletically and personally. And that leaves a mark on them, to a greater or lesser extent. When you see them again at the beginning of the season, you see how much they've matured in such a short time.

Why would you recommend players to sign up for technical schools, clinics or camps like ours?

More than recommending it, it's about having a different experience. Just meeting teammates who share the same position and the same passion is a privilege. You learn from everyone, and that's what we must never lose: learning together. For me, being able to train such a diverse group of students provides me with invaluable learning. Imagine what it's like for them.

And finally, what advice would you give to all those boys and girls who are going to read your interview and who are just starting out?

When you go to training, smile.

At the end of the day, when you go to train and you go with enthusiasm, excitement and a smile, you learn.

And above all, you make the person in front of you's job easier. When a coach sees that they are enjoying themselves, he enjoys himself much more. It's the key ingredient for the ideal recipe. Thank you very much for your work, hugs, friends.
