After some very turbulent years at an institutional and sporting level, especially from the end of the 90s until the mid-2000s, the fans and the team met again in the 2003/04 season, which had begun with many doubts due to the sale of the last pearl of Mareo, David Villa, to Real Zaragoza. However, and against all odds, the team came close to promotion, leading the standings for a good part of the season and even managing to win the winter championship. Promotion to the First Division was achieved in the 2007/08 season under the guidance of coach Manolo Preciado. After a spectacular start, unbeaten in the first nine games, Sporting finished the year in third place after a 2-0 win over SD Eibar at El Molinón in the last game on 15 June 2008.
