Man. United 2020/21 third kit

8th of September 2020. A historic day for Manchester United, as adidas and the English club have unveiled their new third kit for the 2020/21 season. A jersey with a look that is completely different from what we are used to seeing at Manchester United, reviving a design that brings back the iconic stripes from one of the club’s earliest kits.

Manchester United, a historic Premier League club and one of the most successful teams both domestically and internationally, has supporters spread across the UK and around the world. It is also one of the Premier League clubs that generates the most revenue from overseas television rights. Names such as Bobby Charlton, George Best, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo are just some of the renowned players who have played for the club and, in turn, helped it to grow.

Manchester United 2020/21 third kit

Clearly inspired by the first striped jersey worn by Manchester United over 100 years ago, and featuring details from those distinctive designs seen on English kits of the 1970s and 1980s, this new release from adidas Football shows how this Red Devils jersey seeks to update the English club’s traditions, whilst bridging the gap with the modern era of football.

To create this new design, with its bold pattern, adidas has reinterpreted and combined various elements from several of the Manchester club’s historic jerseys. A key feature is the use of the club’s iconic colours – those that form part of United’s identity – resulting in a jersey that is updated and modern, yet true to its essence. The end result is striking and unexpected, reflecting the German brand’s constant ambition and the current trend of pushing the boundaries of football kit design.

The launch of this third kit follows in the footsteps of Manchester United’s home jersey, a garment which, like this one, celebrates and proudly showcases the club’s DNA.

Manchester United’s special connection with stripes on their jerseys dates back to the club’s early years at Old Trafford, their legendary stadium. Back then, the Red Devils used a classic blue and white striped jersey as their third kit. In this new design, adidas pays tribute to that legacy with a clear statement: “110 years of stripes at Old Trafford”.

The design of this third kit draws directly on the adidas kits of the early 1980s, a pivotal period in the aesthetic evolution of football. Those designs marked a true visual revolution, and it is that same spirit of innovation that inspires this new Manchester United jersey.
