An entire country – and perhaps the entire footballing world – had to wait until the 89th minute of yesterday’s match between Portugal and the Republic of Ireland to finally see Cristiano Ronaldo score the most deserved goal, the goal that secures yet another record for him. This is not just another record broken, but a figure that will remain forever in the history of Portuguese and world football, regardless of what all his critics may say about the controversy surrounding the goals against Josef Biscan.
Cristiano Ronaldo - all-time leading goalscorer for national teams
Cristiano Ronaldo, or CR7, is one of the greatest of all time (GOAT) in the sport and undoubtedly one of Portugal’s most prominent national figures. Born in Funchal on the 5th of February 1985, the Portuguese football star, despite all the hardships he faced during his childhood, quickly rose to the top of national football and then to the pinnacle of international football.
With an enviable career at club level and an incredible list of individual and team trophies, Cristiano is undoubtedly a role model for athletes. Among his individual achievements, the most notable are:
- 5 Champions League titles
- Records broken in the Spanish, English and Italian leagues
- Most goals scored for Real Madrid in a single season
- Real Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorer
- All-time leading goalscorer for national teams
As for the Portuguese national team, the current Manchester United striker, as well as being the team’s top scorer, holds another very interesting record. He is the only Portuguese player to have featured in nine consecutive finals of international tournaments, and we mustn’t forget that he is still active, with his sights set on the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar.
This whole story, which began during Portugal’s campaign at Euro 2004, held in Portugal, and has spanned the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the victory at Euro 2016 and the team’s most recent appearance at Euro 2020, is a story well worth telling, but as 111 international goals is a huge list to cover, today we’ll focus on just two headers from yesterday’s match against Ireland. Goals which, as well as securing that international record for Cristiano, also gave the team victory from set pieces in a match that proved tougher than we all expected.
At the start of this match, Cristiano was level on 109 goals with the legendary Iranian international striker, Ali Daei. With these two well-taken finishes, CR7 became the all-time leading goalscorer in international football.
After the match, he said he couldn’t wait for the upcoming matches, challenges and achievements that lay ahead, both with his new club and with the national team.
Yesterday, the Portuguese Football League unveiled the new official ball for Portugal's top professional competitions. It is called the Puma Orbita Liga Portugal.
Football is football, right? Although some inexperienced people may think that this is the case, we are sorry to tell you that there are many forms of football and not all of them are as similar as some people think. Indoor football is one of these cases and we’d like to share with you the greatest difference between indoor football shoes and regular football boots.
The best players in the world are not only the best because of their skill with their feet or how important they have been at a given moment. They are the best because they have left their mark on the club based on their character and strength, setting records that only players of this calibre can achieve. Today, five players who have scored five goals in a single football match are visiting the Fútbol Emotion Fitting Room.
At last, the European Women's Football Championship is ready to kick off this summer, and we have a new special ball for the event. Let's find out all the details.
