Neymar Jr signs for Puma

The biggest move of this transfer window did not take place on the pitch, or at least not within the offices of one of the world’s top clubs. This deal was struck by Puma to finalise what everyone had already been expecting: signing a contract with Brazilian star Neymar, thereby consolidating its position in the world of football as one of the fastest-growing brands with the strongest presence on social media.

The German brand Puma announced last Saturday, alongside Neymar – who plays for Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazilian national team – that he will begin wearing the German brand’s boots once his 15-year contract with Nike comes to an end. This new contract is a long-term deal that will establish the German brand, through its Puma Football division, as a global benchmark thanks to the Brazilian player.

In the official statement released by the German brand, the company states that Neymar is one of the most successful athletes of his generation and that he will not only wear Puma football boots, but will also serve as one of the brand’s ambassadors off the pitch.

According to Bjørn Gulden, CEO of Puma: “It’s fantastic that Neymar Jr. is joining the Puma family. He is one of the best players in the world and has a huge influence on global football and youth culture. We are delighted and look forward to working with him both on and off the pitch.”

Under the hashtag “The KING is Back”, it became clear which boots the player would be wearing, and contrary to what everyone thought, he ultimately opted for Puma King football boots.

He himself spoke on social media about the impact that international football greats such as the Brazilian Pelé and the Argentine Maradona had on his life, and how this influenced his decision to follow in the footsteps of these great stars of South American and international football.

‘I grew up watching videos of these great stars and legends of world football,’ said Neymar in a video in which he mentions Pelé, Cruyff, Matthäus, Eusébio and Maradona. ‘They were the KINGS of the pitch in their day, the Kings of football. Through this new partnership, I want to bring back the same legacy that these athletes created on the pitch.’
