Having heard the stories of so many footballers who started out at a very young age at a club and, over the years, managed to reach the elite level, we want to talk about how you can join a football club’s youth academy. There are various theories on this subject, such as the infamous ‘connections’, having friends who already play there, or even alleged financial favours. However, these are merely rumours and we cannot confirm them directly. What we can say for certain is that, even as part of a club’s youth academy, the chances of becoming a professional footballer and securing a place at a professional club remain slim.
How can I join a football club’s youth academy directly?
When we’re talking about very young children, clubs organise trials which anyone can sign up for and take part in. The only drawback is that the players are often so young that it is extremely difficult to assess their true quality and potential as footballers.
As we move up through the age groups and the players get a bit older, we can begin to assess all that footballing potential much more accurately. This is where the youth academies really start to come into their own, as they operate almost like a professional organisation and have their own scouts spread across the country and even around the world. So, even if you play for your local village or town club, don’t worry: if you’ve got what it takes, and with today’s media, those scouts may well come across you. Sooner or later, you’ll get your chance.
How do I know if they already know me?
As a general rule, the players who stand out most in their youth teams receive invitations from teams in higher divisions to demonstrate their ability in competitions where the standard is already higher. Furthermore, as part of their strategy to expand their scouting network, the big clubs often enter into sporting agreements with smaller clubs. In this way, the smaller clubs can inform them about new talent in their squads whom they consider ready to make the leap to the next level.
Another development, particularly in recent years, is that football has become a mass sport with a truly global reach. Someone might score a spectacular goal in an African league and, barely two hours later, you could already be watching a video of that very same goal. All this has given rise to an ever-expanding professional market: that of player representation and scouting agencies. These companies have scouts based in different parts of the world and are constantly on the lookout for talented players who are not yet widely known. When they operate effectively, these agencies can be a major boost for a footballer, as they are responsible for helping him find a club where he can continue to develop his career.
They haven’t got in touch with me yet. Do I still stand a chance?
This is a message for all of you: football can be wonderful, but it can also be very cruel. However, if your dream is to become footballers, never give up, keep working hard, and, in the end, you’ll be rewarded. It’s true that it’s easier to fulfil your dream of becoming a footballer once you’re already part of a top-flight club, but don’t give up and show what you’re made of in every match and every training session. Perseverance in football is KEY.
For all those who think there are no rags-to-riches stories in football, who hasn’t heard of Jamie Vardy? He rose to the very top of the Premier League and the England national team after starting his career in the lowest tiers of the English football pyramid.
To sum up, we want to make it clear that there’s no perfect formula for reaching the very top. All it takes is hard work, hard work, more hard work and, of course, talent. So forget the pressure of trying to get into a youth academy, enjoy playing football in your neighbourhood and on the streets, and, above all, enjoy playing football. If you’ve got what it takes and possess that key factor – perseverance – we’re sure your chance will eventually come.
