On the 1st of June, the fourth round of the 2019 ‘In Search of the Goalkeeper of the Future’ competition took place at the San Jorge football ground in Santurzi (Bilbao). More than 400 goalkeepers from all corners of Spain gathered to test their skills and take part in a trial with the best goalkeeping coaches, who assessed each participant’s abilities.
A stellar line-up of coaches joined forces to assess and evaluate the brave souls who faced the scrutiny of these professionals, who are accustomed to training goalkeepers from the top youth academies in Spanish football. Rubén Pérez (former professional goalkeeper in the top flight), Raúl Iglesias (top-flight goalkeeping coach) and Rufino Lekue (goalkeeping coach at SD Eibar) are just some of the 20 leading assessors who made themselves available to Futbol Emotion for this event.
The coaches were responsible for assessing and evaluating the boys and girls on various specific technical aspects, such as footwork, reaction speed, blocking, and mobility and positioning, during the morning trials. The best players in each category were selected for the afternoon session, during which various tests were used to assess other aspects of the game, such as decision-making, aerial play, and the decision-making and determination of each goalkeeper. From this second phase, three winners were selected from each category to compete in the final, which will take place in Madrid on the 22nd of June.
It is worth noting the calibre of the goalkeepers who trained at the Santurtzi ground, including both the Under-23s and those from the youth teams competing for the prize of a year’s sponsorship from adidas and SP. In the senior category, there are three strong contenders to sign for CD Lugo for the 2019–2020 season.
The next event will take place in Barcelona on the 10th of May. There are already more than 500 applicants registered for the trial.
