So far, in our previous articles, we have mainly talked about Italian goalkeepers. Today, however, we would like to introduce you to a French goalkeeper who spent most of his career in Italy, where he played for several teams. Wherever he went, he left a lasting impression on both the fans and the clubs themselves.
His move to Italy was thanks to Walter Zenga, who spotted him when he made his debut in French football for Cannes, where he had a superb season. Shortly afterwards, he was signed by one of Milan’s two big clubs: Inter. There, he wore the Inter kit, although he was initially the third-choice goalkeeper. Even so, he managed to make his debut thanks to injuries to the goalkeepers ahead of him.
The following season he went out on loan to Verona, where he had an excellent campaign and made numerous saves. He then returned to Inter, but did not get many opportunities and ended up being sold permanently to Parma. It was there that he established himself as a first-choice goalkeeper and won the only title of his career: a Coppa Italia.
After four magnificent seasons at Parma, Fiorentina decided to take a chance on him, and they were not wrong. During his early years in Florence, Frey went on to become one of the best goalkeepers on the national and international scene, to the point where he earned a place in the French national team.
Later on, due to a number of injuries, he had to leave Florence and head for Genoa. He eventually ended his career at Bursaspor in Turkey.
Let’s now turn our attention to the goalkeeper gloves and football boots that Frey used throughout his career.
In his early years, when he was still a young goalkeeper, we saw him play in the classic Reusch Arrow gloves. Today, the brand has drawn inspiration from that model once again with the Reusch Pure Contact Arrow.
Subsequently, for many years, Frey relied on the German brand adidas for both his boots and gloves, right up until the end of his professional career.
In recent years, having retired from professional football, he has taken part in a legends’ tournament where numerous retired stars come together to play charity matches. In this new chapter, we have seen him playing with products from HO Soccer, a brand that appears to have the French goalkeeper’s seal of approval.
Although he wasn’t a goalkeeper who won a great many trophies, Frey left his mark on every team he played for, becoming a role model and a great captain. Fans remember him as much for his spectacular saves as for the wonderful person and leader he proved to be off the pitch.
Here at Fútbol Emotion, we believe that Sébastien Frey was a great goalkeeper. What do you think?
