Messi, the Ballon d’Or winner, receives his new adidas Nemeziz boots

Just one day after Lionel Messi won yet another major title – his sixth Ballon d’Or – adidas is seizing the opportunity to officially launch a new pair of football boots designed exclusively for the Argentine. Today we’re going to take a look at the new adidas Nemeziz Messi 19.1, a pair of boots with more history than we can imagine.

For those who keep a close eye on football trivia relating to boots, these new boots will come as no surprise, as the Argentine star wore them last Sunday in FC Barcelona’s match against Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Although this is merely a colour restyling – a change of colourway – these new boots are steeped in symbolism and history for the Argentine star, as they represent the year in which Lionel Messi won his first Ballon d’Or, in 2010. That same year, during the World Cup in South Africa, we saw the Argentina international wearing the now-discontinued F50 adizero in a purple colourway with fluorescent green and white detailing – the very same colours found on these new adidas Nemeziz boots. Furthermore, they feature an upper made entirely from natural leather, a version customised especially for the Argentine star.

However, since 2010, the boots have evolved and, although natural leather is still used by many brands, these new boots – despite bearing many similarities to those from 2010 – do have some differences. As for the colourway, we can see that purple remains the predominant colour, but the brand’s branding details, rather than being white, are now fluorescent green to stand out even more on the pitch.

The upper of the F50s, which was made of leather, is now featured on these Nemeziz boots in a synthetic material coated with a film that protects it from abrasion: 360 Agility Tension Tape Upper. On the outsole, we can also see that, whilst the F50s featured a completely white, one-piece outsole with fluorescent green studs, these new Nemeziz boots retain that essence, whilst incorporating the distinctive split sole of the Nemeziz 19 – the latest generation of agility boots from the German brand – which completely revolutionised this type of sole by introducing a two-piece design based on Messi’s own specifications.
