One of the most recalled pictures of the 1998's World Cup finale is Ronaldo Nazario, with a haunting gaze, gobsmacked and resigned after loosing against Zinedine Zidane's France. In that image the forward carries his boots hanging from the neck, a marketing strategy with which Nike sought to gain presence during that finale and, no doubt, it managed to... although surely not with the best outcome.
Almost 20 years have gone by and just a few months before the new football World Cup, there is a Brazilian player that has all the chances to become one of next summer stars. We are talking, of course, about Neymar Jr. This has been the selected player to turn the tables with a pair of Mercurials inspired by the ones of that historic World Cup.
Some of you might think that it doesn't make much sense to launch a boot inspired by a model that didn't bring much luck to the canarinha but, in fact, this Mercurial model is posibly the most coveted one from the Nike Mercurial silo and a boot that, for those who grew up in the 90's, remember with special affection as soon as we see the wave drawn on the exterior of the boot along with the representative colours of the model: silver, blue and fluor.
In technical terms, there are slight changes given that this isn't a generational leap although it's true that Nike has modified the upper a little bit. However, this time, it has less bending lines that, consequently, smoothen the synthetic Teijin, making the "fit" more comfortable and providing a fantastic sensation of contact with the ball.
