The surname ‘ultra’ in Nike football boots is used for those models that give us certain hints or ideas about what we will see next in the Nike boot catalogue. A recent example of this was the Nike Air Zoom Ultra, which preceded the launch of the Nike Zoom Mercurial. However, perhaps the most significant launch was in 2017 with the Nike Flyknit Ultra, which marked the beginning of this type of launch and inspired the current Nike Phantom Ultra Venom.
We could say that, if in 2017 the Flyknit Ultra were Mercurial Vapor boots made entirely from Flyknit, the current Phantom Ultra look like Nike Hypervenom Phantom 3 boots made entirely from the same material. This is a fabulous idea, as we are talking about one of the best uppers, with one of the plates that players have liked the most over the years.
The upper, or shell, is exactly the same as the one we saw in 2017, the Flyknit Ultra, but with the Hypervenom silo's signature weave, with those pods across the striking area, which in this case are not made of foam, but rather exposed thread. Once we've used this upper a few times, it becomes very soft and, above all, very comfortable, giving us more than ever the feeling of wearing a thick sock.
In addition, the grip of this material, as it is exposed and has no protective layer, is incredible. These are some of the boots with the most grip that we will find in this style.
The toe box in this case is slightly wider, largely due to the Hyperreactive plate, which comes from the Nike Hypervenom Phantom 3. This plate combines semi-conical and laminated studs, offering excellent responsiveness and simply perfect lightness.
The lightness and width of this plate make the boot feel slightly wider, more comfortable and adaptable to more feet than its 2017 counterpart, but with the same feel in terms of striking, fit and comfort. Currently, we do not have a boot on the market with these characteristics; perhaps the closest thing would be the current Nike Phantom GT II football boots.
In conclusion, we have a boot with the surname Ultra, which brings us back to one of the favourite silos of all swoosh lovers, Hypervenom, with one of the most beloved uppers, Flyknit Ultra. What more could you ask for? As you know, this is a special edition that has already flown off the shelves. The question then is: is Hypervenom making a comeback? Does the Ultra name predict new boots made from this exact material? We'll have to keep an eye on the Swoosh brand over the next few months.
