10. Nigeria (Russia 2018)
They didn’t win the World Cup or go far in the tournament, but as a jersey it was a worldwide sensation. With its modern, eye-catching and distinctive design, it sold out in many shops. It is one of the most famous jerseys of recent times.
9. Mexico (France 1998)
The green one with the Aztec design. One of the most beautiful and unique jerseys from any World Cup. It’s hugely popular among collectors and fans of retro jerseys.
8. Croatia (France 1998)
7. England (England 1966)
6. Brazil (Mexico 1970)
5. Netherlands (Germany 1974)
This jersey marked a turning point, and was one of the most controversial due to the Cruyff affair, which we have mentioned on several occasions. With a minimalist design very much in keeping with the era, it enabled the Dutch national team to play an attractive, attacking brand of football, earning them the nickname ‘the Clockwork Orange’.
4. Argentina (Mexico 1986)
Diego’s Argentina, the Argentina of ‘the Hand of God’, with this blue kit serving as Argentina’s away strip in that World Cup, secured them the long-awaited World Cup trophy. Maradona’s now-famous goal, in which he outwitted the entire English defence, elevated him to the status of a footballing god.
3. Germany (Italy 1990)
In what was Germany’s final World Cup before reunification, they faced Argentina in the final and secured victory with a controversial penalty in the 83rd minute, just before the end of the match. The colours of the German flag covered the entire jersey, already moving towards the more modern designs we are accustomed to today.
2. Spain (South Africa 2010)
The Spanish national football team swept all before them in South Africa in this kit, playing a brand of football that won everyone over and carrying the hallmark of ‘tiki-taka’ right up to the very last moment, when Iniesta’s goal secured the World Cup title. An unforgettable moment for everyone.
1. France (France 1998)
With a magnificent Zidane and a team behind him, France defied all expectations by beating Ronaldo’s all-powerful Brazil. France’s now iconic jersey, with the colours of its flag running across the chest, spurred the home side on to lift the World Cup.
In this top 10, we’ve seen every style from World Cups past; we’d love to hear which other designs spring to mind, and which ones you’d love to see back on the pitch.
