As soon as we heard about Coach Mancini’s squad announcement, we immediately wondered: which boot will the Azzurri be wearing most during the European Championship?
After reading through the entire squad list, researching the players’ boots and doing some calculations, we came to the conclusion that the most commonly used boot is... Did you think we were going to tell you that so quickly? No, no, no... one step at a time. The best approach is to start with each line, position by position, and discover together which boot and brand will be most commonly used by the squad members.
GOALKEEPERS
Mancini has called up four goalkeepers so far: Donnarumma, Sirigu, Meret and Cragno. All four of these stars are wearing adidas boots; three of them are wearing Predators, whilst the only one wearing a different model is Sirigu, who has opted for the Nemeziz.
DEFENDERS
Mancini has called up 11 defenders. Five of them wear Nike, three wear adidas and three wear Puma. We can therefore see that, for now, adidas has a slight edge, with seven players representing the brand with the three stripes. Only three players wear a brand other than those mentioned above: Chiellini, Di Lorenzo and Toloi.
MIDFIELDERS
For the midfielders, the situation is different. We can see that one boot stands out above all the others: specifically, the Nike Phantom GT, worn by no fewer than four of the eight midfielders. We also find one pair of Mercurials, with the rest all being adidas. So, to sum up: five Nike and three adidas.
STRIKERS
Let’s move on to the main attraction: the forwards, the Azzurri’s goal scorers. Here too, one Nike boot stands out above all others; in this case, we’re talking about the Mercurial, worn by no fewer than five forwards. Staying with Nike, just one forward wears the Phantom GT. The rest are sponsored by adidas, with two Nemeziz, one Copa and one X Ghosted.
After analysing each line, we tally the figures and see which football boot and brand are most commonly used by the Italian national team.
3. In third place is Puma, with just three players: Chiellini and Toloi, who both wear the Ultra range, and the Neapolitan full-back Di Lorenzo, who opts for the Puma Future Z.
2. In second place is adidas, with no fewer than 15 players choosing to represent the German brand. There are two most popular models. Tied, with five players per model, are the Predator and Nemeziz. Donnarumma, Immobile and Castrovilli are three of the many players wearing these two models. Next, we see that the Copa and X Ghosted are also tied, with two players each.
1. And in first place, of course, we find Nike, with 16 players from the Italian national team, just over half of those selected. This was to be expected, just as it was to be expected that the Nike boot most used by the Azzurri—and, consequently, the most widely used boot within the national team—is the Mercurial, with no fewer than nine sponsored players. Just behind comes the Phantom with six and the Tiempo with one.
