The most die-hard football fans are counting down the days as the world’s premier international tournament draws ever closer and the designs of some of the kits to be worn by the world’s best players this summer in Russia are gradually being revealed. Major national teams sponsored by Nike – such as England, France and Portugal – have already unveiled theirs; now it is the turn of the Brazilian national football team.
Nike and Brazil are one of the most iconic partnerships in the world of football, a relationship with a history marked by thousands of unforgettable moments for fans. Interestingly, the Brazilian national team’s jersey wasn’t always yellow. The team began its career in the first half of the 20th century, wearing white and blue. Following a devastating defeat at the Maracanã Stadium in 1950 – known worldwide as the ‘Maracanazo’ – the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) decided to hold a competition in 1953, announcing it via a newspaper advert. The only condition set for the competition was that the new kit had to incorporate the four colours of the national flag: yellow, blue, green and white. Since then, the ‘Amarelinha’ national team has worn this kit.
The Brazilians’ home kit for Russia, known as ‘Samba de Oro’, is inspired by the jerseys worn in the 1970s, when the World Cup was broadcast in colour for the first time. The yellow is much brighter than that of the jerseys worn over the last 20 years. For the first time since the 1960s, blue has been reintroduced into the home kit in a very prominent way, appearing on a collar band, more specifically on the small of the back. A globe from the national flag, alongside the phrase “você é a seleção” – which translates as “you are the national team” – adds the finishing touch to the home kit’s design.
The away kit features a star pattern radiating out from the national team’s crest, which tells the story of two key moments in the team’s history: the first time they wore blue, in 1958 against Sweden, and the second, the star representing their first World Cup victory.
The jersey features Nike VaporKnit technology, an evolved version of Nike AeroSwift, which is lighter than its predecessor. It features new knitting patterns for a better fit to the body and sleeves, whilst also enhancing speed through both performance and aesthetics. According to Pete Hoppins, Senior Design Director at Nike Football Apparel: “Nike VaporKnit technology is lighter due to the open-hole texture woven into the garments, which effectively uses far less yarn than previous jerseys. The result is a garment that allows you to play and stay comfortable for more than 90 minutes.”
The new Brazilian national football team jerseys will be available on the Fútbol Emotion website at the end of March.
