With the launch of the new Puma Ultra 1.2 Speed Of Light football boots, we’re reminded that Puma’s new goalkeeper gloves are exactly what a modern goalkeeper would wear – but take note: if there’s one thing the German brand excels at, it’s offering a wide range of options to all footballers, as exemplified by the recently unveiled Puma ULTRA boot. Perhaps the speed category was difficult to pigeonhole into two truly formidable categories. The now-legendary Puma ONE football boot, much like the glove, is fading into obscurity, though not without first emphasising its quality, comfort and innovation, whilst always bearing in mind the distinctive ‘classic’ feel provided by the leather.

Puma Football 2020/2021 goalkeeper gloves
We’re not surprised by the dedication and craftsmanship that Puma has demonstrated for years across absolutely all its collections. Football boots are their obsession, their labour of love and their constant pursuit season after season, and they’re making that clear with the Ultra range for this final stretch of this unusual year, 2020. Well, given the German brand’s proven quality and expertise in the goalkeeper market, until now, the Puma EVODISC glove launched in 2017 was the only one that truly lived up to the reputation for which the German brand is famous. Although it didn’t achieve commercial success, it was the boldness and passion behind it that we goalkeepers and enthusiasts in this world truly valued. With that in mind, and with the Puma Future glove already on the market, this new Puma Ultra Grip 1 joins the line-up.
This marked the brand’s return to speed; for a brand like Puma, which produced boots for the world’s fastest man, speed has always been in its DNA, and since the evoSPEED range was discontinued in 2017, the brand has not had a dedicated, distinct speed boot. That is why we can see the real reason behind this launch and just how important it is for the German brand, including this boot we are discussing today, which is part of the Speed Of Light Pack.
Technical features: Puma Ultra Grip 1
We’ll start by talking about the most important part – the part that really gives meaning to the word ‘GLOVE’ and, above all, to this post – the palm. This palm is made from 4mm Puma SuperSoft latex, known as Elite Grip Latex, in a hybrid roll/flat cut. This latex is an improvement – the latest development from the Germans, based on X-treme Grip. A latex with advanced features, particularly in terms of durability.
The hybrid technology in its cut creates two distinct sections: a larger contact surface against the ball on the outer fingers with the roll cut, and the negative cut applied to the central fingers for a greater sense of compression and control.
Simplicity on the back. We can see how this part leads the public to believe that this is a glove which hasn’t really made any progress compared to its German competitor, but that’s not the case at all. Although the back of this glove is somewhat ‘conservative’ in terms of the bold aesthetics seen in recent years. We find a back made from a material similar to neoprene, with layers of GC PRO natural latex mounted on top to act as a clearing zone. Furthermore, as a new feature, we see flex lines for superior lightness and comfort, as well as perfect grip.
One thing Puma has kept unchanged, in a move towards tradition, is the wrist strap on the ONE glove: a classic, extra-wide elasticated fastening strap. It also features an anatomical design that allows you to flex your hand naturally at the wrist, making it much easier to grip, whilst also acting as a functional support.
