MLS jerseys are already taking centre stage at Fútbol Emotion. We actually discussed them last year in our blog section, and the fact is that, although the MLS is still a minor league, it’s a competition that’s set to be the talk of the town in the future. The brand providing all the official football merchandise will be the German brand adidas. Just as with the NBA, a single brand will be responsible for all the teams – something that only happens on very rare occasions.
The MLS continues to evolve and expand its market; it is a league that has managed to spread that ‘MADE IN USA’ ethos to a region as steeped in football tradition as the European market. In the 2019 season, there were 23 franchises spread across two different conferences, although it is surprising to note that by 2021, there will be as many as 25 teams, and by 2022, the figure is set to reach 33 – a number that appears to be the final one.

Major League Soccer is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and it’s doing so in spectacular fashion. It was founded in 1993 as part of the United States’ commitment to football (soccer) and also in connection with its hosting of the 1994 World Cup. Its first season didn’t kick off until 1996, with just 10 clubs taking part, including Los Angeles Galaxy FC, which remains the club with the most MLS titles (5) to date. To be honest, we’ve seen the league grow from a time when penalties were scored from the centre of the pitch with a run-up, to where we are now: a league that has featured players such as Kaká, David Beckham (current owner of Inter Miami FC), Zlatan Ibrahimović and Steven Gerrard, and which, for example, at this very moment still features stars such as Chicharito, playing for LA Galaxy, Carlos Vela playing for LA FC and even the Portuguese international Nani, playing for Orlando City, not to mention the essential fact that all clubs have new, modern stadiums designed exclusively for football.
One of its most interesting features is the fact that this football league is also run from a single governing body, unlike other major sporting competitions in the country. There is a central governing body, the MLS headquarters, based in New York, which holds all the current licences for the clubs participating in the MLS. Each club has its own private owners and is managed individually by them, whilst always adhering to the basic rules laid down by the MLS. Another interesting fact is that, due to this system, there is no relegation in the MLS, although there are other football leagues in the country.
Currently, with clubs based in cities and areas considered key in a country as vast as the United States, football is a growing sport, and proof of this lies in the investment being made in the sport itself – both men’s and women’s – where we see stars from the same league endorsing football boots through numerous marketing campaigns. There is extensive media coverage at both local and national levels, and clubs such as the New York Red Bull, Chicago Fire, Toronto FC, Montreal Impact and LA Galaxy are already well-known and idolised by promising young footballers, and enjoy the same level of recognition internationally.
But this is nothing new. The MLS has previously had some great players in its teams. One need only mention the great former Brazilian footballer Pelé or the Dutchman Johan Cruyff; more recent examples include the Frenchman Thierry Henry, the Irishman Robbie Keane, the Englishman Frank Lampard, the Brazilian Kaká, the former captain of the England national team and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, and the Italian genius Pirlo. Spain has recently been represented by striker David Villa, one of the all-time leading goalscorers in our country’s history.
