The new landscape we currently find ourselves in means that brands often have to work around the clock to adapt many of their plans. Nike’s latest launch, featuring its new kits for the national teams taking part in the upcoming European Championship, is clear evidence of this very phenomenon.
Teams such as Portugal, France, England, Croatia, Poland, Norway and Finland unveiled their full ranges of kits from the American brand last Monday.
New Nike kits for the EURO
Starting with the Dutch national team, Nike unveiled a new version of the now-classic Oranje kit to KNVB players and fans, featuring the traditional lion roaring powerfully. The entire design incorporates elements associated with the lion, such as pride, strength and courage – values that are celebrated in this new design on both the home and away shirts.
For the England team, the American brand has opted for a ‘cleaner’ design for both jerseys, with the home kit clearly inspired by the England team’s home kit from the early 1990s.
As for the kits of the reigning world champions, Nike has unveiled a collection inspired by the best of streetwear and contemporary French art. France’s new jerseys are stylish and bold, with a design that reflects the connection between the different generations of world champions in this squad.
Croatia, the surprise runners-up at the World Cup, once again feature their traditional chequered pattern as the standout design on both kits for this Balkan nation. The star of this Croatian collection is the away kit, which boasts a darker, more understated look, with the distinctive chequered pattern printed across the entire jersey.
To provide Poland with more eye-catching kits, Nike has turned to the country’s historical archives in search of the perfect inspiration for these new designs. The so-called ‘golden age’ of the Polish national team, which coincided with the late 1970s and early 1980s—when the team finished third in the World Cup on two occasions—has served as the inspiration for the design and development of these new kits.
In the case of the Turkey jersey, Nike did not need to undertake any particularly complex work, as both designs—the home and the away—are virtually identical and feature the traditional star and crescent. Furthermore, the word “Türkiye” or “My Turkey” is printed on the inside of both jerseys, as a symbol of the Turkish people’s national pride.
To celebrate both their pride and their courageous spirit – which saw them qualify for a major international tournament for the first time – Nike has launched a collection for Finland that draws deep inspiration from the national flag and the country’s strong sense of patriotism.
