Although many competitions decided to resume the 2019/20 season following the hiatus, other leagues in Europe and the rest of the world chose to bring the season to a definitive close to protect everyone involved. Coinciding with the return of football and adidas’s new campaign, numerous clubs have begun unveiling their official kits for the 2020/21 season. One of them is Ajax, one of European football’s historic giants, which, despite not currently competing officially, already has its sights set on the coming season.
To speak of Ajax is to speak of one of the greatest clubs in the history of European football. The Amsterdam-based side is the most successful club in the Eredivisie and boasts an enviable list of honours: four Champions League titles, two Intercontinental Cups, three European Super Cups, one Europa League title and one European Cup Winners’ Cup. Beyond its trophies, the Dutch club is also recognised worldwide for its prolific youth academy, which has produced legends such as Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Edwin van der Sar, Edgar Davids and Patrick Kluivert, amongst many others. It is a club that has forged a unique footballing identity and which, generation after generation, continues to produce teams capable of competing at the very highest level.
2020/21 Ajax away kit
Ajax’s new away kit will be the jersey the Dutch side will mainly wear in their away matches. The design pays tribute to some of the greatest successes in the club’s history, whilst maintaining a modern, forward-looking look. The jersey combines different shades of blue with a graphic print inspired by the aesthetic of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Unveiled as part of adidas’ global ‘Ready for Sport’ campaign, this new official Ajax jersey is not simply another kit for the Amsterdam club’s fans and players. This is one of the adidas football jerseys created to celebrate and welcome the return of numerous sports to competition across the globe. According to the German brand’s designers, who worked alongside members of the Dutch club to finalise the design of this kit, the idea was to revive that distinctive 1980s style, whilst adapting it with more contemporary elements. A style that became very popular on adidas jerseys during that era and which serves as a tribute to the club’s successful past, whilst continuing to look towards the future.
This revamped design, inspired by a retro aesthetic, features red and white details – the Dutch club’s traditional colours – which contrast with the blue background and the modern, 1980s-inspired graphic style. In short, this is a jersey with a retro feel, yet thoroughly contemporary, which also incorporates the latest technologies developed by the German brand.
