In 2002, the Predator silo arrived to revolutionise the market. With the World Cup in Korea and Japan came the Predator Mania, another of the models favoured by its fans, both in the launch colours and in the now iconic champagne colour. But, friends, the Predator Mania OG has become an iconic football boot, and at times prohibitively expensive – not least because of the adidas Predator Mania Japan Blue that we’re presenting today.

This colour, featuring electric blue, which contrasts perfectly with the German brand’s corporate colours of red and white, was sold ONLY in Asia in 2002. This adds a special touch to this release, known as the Tormentor Pack, which any of you can now purchase via the Fútbol Emotion website.

The collection we’re presenting below isn’t just a single pair of boots; this time, three models will take centre stage: two football boots and a sneaker to complete your lifestyle look. It will feature the Predator 19+ range in the original colourway, the Predator 19.1 in white, and the Predator 19.1 TR LTR, the street shoe from the Mania collection.

Looking in more detail at the technologies featured in these adidas Predator Mania 19 football boots, we can see how they combine the best of the 2002 Predator Mania boots with the modern technologies currently found in the Predator 19. Starting with the upper, and although we can see an adaptation of the current adidas Predator 19+ football boot, the Controlskin has been completely removed to make way for a soft natural leather that extends all the way to the forefoot. This leather is the same as that found on the adidas Copa 19+ football boot, known as ‘Fusion Skin’. As we all know, this leather provides a soft feel for shots and/or passes, as well as extreme comfort. Best of all – and the reason why all of us feeling a bit nostalgic have let out a smile – is the wonderful return of the ‘Predator Element’. We must say, especially for those of you planning to buy either version, that you should forget about the design of the original version, as, quite simply, on this occasion, adidas has decided to shape the striking element using a vinyl-like material.

These traditional ‘strips’, in the 2002 OG version, were designed for maximum control, spin and great comfort. The purists amongst you will no doubt have noticed this straight away and asked: ‘What about the legendary tongue that preceded the Predator silo?’ We think this is one of the major ‘buts’ we’ve found with this collection. Perhaps it would have been nice to give a little nod to this icon on the pitch.

Everything we’ve discussed so far relates to football boots. The only difference compared to the street version is that adidas has decided to fit the street shoe with a sole worthy of the best basketball sneakers, featuring the famous Boost technology. What is adidas’ Boost technology? Boost stands for Pre-expanded Thermoplastic Polyurethane – a bit of a mouthful. The German petrochemical company BASF teamed up with adidas to create this true cornerstone of the world of cushioning. We sincerely believe this was a masterstroke on adidas’s part, and it paid off brilliantly because they managed the timing and information so well; indeed, what has happened with Boost from that day until now has been infinitely greater than the brand could ever have dreamed of.

The adidas Predator Mania is back – an iconic football boot returning to the pitch in 2019, but updated for today’s game. Is adidas cooking up something up its sleeve for 2020?
