Raheem Sterling has reason to celebrate. The England international reached the impressive milestone of 100 Premier League goals this past weekend – no mean feat.
As if that weren’t enough, a superb performance at Euro 2020 last summer has been complemented by a fantastic start to the season with his club, which currently tops the Premier League table, and all this has not gone unnoticed by New Balance, which has set to work with the aim of giving its star player the recognition he deserves within the brand.
Hence these New Balance Furon v6+ Jamaica football boots, a special edition for the Sky Blue player, of which only 195 pairs will be produced, all in UK size 8 – the size worn by Sterling. These Furon boots feature no technological changes compared to the standard model, so in this blog post we’ll focus solely on their design.
The boots are inspired by the Manchester City winger’s Jamaican roots, a connection that has always been very close to his heart and which he has publicly expressed on numerous occasions. The design is packed with details that show the player has played a greater role than simply choosing the colours for these New Balance v6+ Jamaica football boots. Let’s start with the obvious: the colours. Green covers the entire boot, but this isn’t just any green; it’s the exact same shade found on the Jamaican flag, a vibrant hue that looks fantastic on the Furon and perfectly captures the essence of the American brand’s speed silo.
Let’s continue our look at these New Balance football boots, focusing on the instep area. A classic, centred lacing system sits atop the high-quality knit fabric produced by the American brand, featuring a detail at the top: the Jamaican flag. But that’s not all, as the laces also feature this flag, accompanied by three dates—1692, 1962 and 1994—all marking significant moments in Jamaican history.
The first of these concerns the earthquake and tsunami that caused the destruction of the city of Port Royal on that date. At that time, Port Royal was the seat of the British government in Jamaica and the island’s main fishing and trading centre during the 17th century. Between 1,000 and 3,000 people (almost half the city’s total population) died as a result of the earthquake and the impact of the giant waves that followed.
The second, 1962, refers to the year in which the colony of Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom. Since then, on the 6th of August each year, Jamaica celebrates Independence Day, the most important date in the country’s history, which has been designated a national holiday. Finally, and referring to the star of these New Balance Furon v6+ Jamaica football boots, 1994 is the year Raheem Sterling was born in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica.
Let’s continue with the details of these New Balance football boots and move on to the outer heel, where we find the phrase “OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE”. This is the country’s motto, and it is based on the multiracial roots of the population. In 1962, to mark its independence, the Jamaican authorities officially adopted this motto, which still appears on its coat of arms today.
Moving on to the heel, this is the area where the brand has chosen to personalise the New Balance Furon v6+ football boots. On boots designed exclusively for a footballer, neither his name nor his logo can be missing, so it is here that we can see the name of the Jamaican Raheem Sterling accompanied by his logo – a feature we already saw on the exclusive edition worn by the City player during EURO 2020 and which is repeated here, with the colours adapted to the design and inspiration behind these football boots.
Finally, we turn our attention to the front of these football boots to look at a detail that we might easily have missed, but didn’t. On the brand logo, we find some very small letters all over the inside. By zooming in on the image, we were able to read the text, which reads “THIAGO-ROMEO, MELODY-ROSE, THAI-CRUZ, TORI-SEVYN”, which, as many of you will have guessed, are the names of Raheem Sterling’s kids.
That’s all for now on one of the most personalised and emotionally charged special editions we’ve ever seen. These New Balance football boots are now available at Fútbol Emotion.
Nineties nostalgia is back with a combination of the new adidas Predator boots and the signature 90s aesthetic of adidas EQT. These luxurious boots are going to be thoroughly analysed.
