The official adidas football jerseys for Euro 2020 are now a reality. Accustomed to the retro designs of past tournaments and even digital styles and techniques, we see how adidas has decided to break the mould and incorporate a fusion of football and art, inspired by the similarities between these two worlds.
We’ve already seen this in Spain’s new kit for EURO 2020, and indeed, the Spanish national team’s jersey is perhaps one of the kits that has sparked the most controversy, as it perfectly captures the approach taken by adidas’ designers in creating it. Taking a unique approach to developing the jerseys, the brand’s creators produced hand-drawn sketches rather than using digital methods. These works of art, created by a diverse group of designers, expressed the passion and excitement shared by fans and players alike, which then became the inspiration for the final patterns, colour schemes and numerical graphics on the jerseys.

Juergen Rank, Senior Design Director at adidas, commented: “It was a unique challenge to develop a range of jerseys that successfully conveyed the raw emotion and unifying power of football. But starting the creative process with a focus on hand-drawn sketches allowed us to be more direct, human and emotional in what we created. We now have the final result, which will truly succeed in bringing together the worlds of art and football.”
As we mentioned earlier regarding the adidas Uniforia ball – the real star of this competition – the new ball for EURO 2020 will be the centrepiece. The tournament will be played across 12 different European countries for the first time; the Uniforia design celebrates the idea of building bridges, blurring borders and the diversity of fans and players, through a unique fusion of art and football. Furthermore, the 60th anniversary of this competition will be very much in the spotlight throughout the tournament and, to mark this, adidas has created a special commemorative badge to feature on every match shirt. The text on these badges is written in the language of the host country, and their shape corresponds to the outline of the stadium where the match will take place.
Euro 2020 Germany jersey
The Germany jersey stays true to its essence. Horizontal stripes have been a fixture of the German national team’s kit design since the 1980s, and the 2020 version will see this iconic detail reinterpreted in the style of contemporary hand-painted striped fabrics. In a nod to modern urban style, it features a simple aesthetic inspired by the clean brushstrokes of the original artwork that informed its design.
The new German jersey also sees the return of the black, red and gold colours of the German flag on the sleeves, whilst the dynamic lines within the flag motif represent the diverse backgrounds of German players and fans, celebrating the values of unity and inclusion that the country takes pride in showcasing.
Euro 2020 Belgium jersey
One of the breakout teams at the 2018 World Cup in Russia was undoubtedly Belgium. The Belgian national team’s jersey celebrates the bold, progressive colours of their national flag. Created with handcrafted brushstrokes that visually represent the collection’s artistic concept, the flag design features intersecting lines that proudly hint at the letter ‘B’ – a detail that also appears on the back of the collar, rounding off the jersey's subtle and intricate details.
Euro 2020 Sweden jersey
The Sweden national team jersey combines class and modernity, featuring a clean, minimalist look that draws attention to the graphic design on the sleeves. A contemporary take on the Swedish flag gives the jersey a fresh, clean feel, whilst a ‘Sverige’ detail on the back of the collar rounds off the elegant, stylish design.
The rest of the UEFA EURO 2020 jerseys will be available soon via the Fútbol Emotion website.
