We are going to start this post in a way we never have before, and that is by thanking adidas for this new generation. We've been an X user for the last few years, until the Ghosted came along. A boot which focused too much on the concept of a lightweight, snug-fitting boot, overlooking the two most important factors in football boots: comfort and functionality. Like many users, we couldn’t get used to the adidas X Ghosted, and that’s why we’d like to thank the German brand for this new generation.
Today we have the pleasure of introducing the adidas X SpeedFlow, adidas’s new range of lightweight, speed-focused boots. These adidas football boots bring a host of new features compared to the previous generation, so let’s start with the most important one: the upper.
Of course, the upper of these new adidas X SpeedFlow boots is made from a synthetic yarn material. It remains very thin, but the new material used by adidas to construct the new X SpeedFlow is much less rigid than in the previous generation, and the feel when slipping your foot into the boot is infinitely more comfortable than in the previous adidas X Ghosted models. Speaking of the upper, adidas has incorporated a very important internal cable technology into these new X SpeedFlow boots, called Agilitycage, which will provide the stability we need when making explosive movements. This is essential in a boot with such a minimalist shell, as good support will prevent injuries, as well as providing that secure fit inside the boot that we, as users of the German brand’s speed range, love so much.
Moving on to the instep area, here we find another of the new features I’ve liked most about the new adidas X Speedflow football boots. PrimeKnit is the material used by the Germans for this area, and because the boot fits so snugly around the foot, we need a stretchy material that adapts to the instep. This is something we already had in the adidas X Ghosted, but the new feature is that in this latest generation, PrimeKnit extends across the boot to cover the area below the ankle as well, which we consider a wise move by adidas as that’s where the boot exerts a lot of pressure on the foot, and the inclusion of this stretchy material will make us feel much more comfortable and reduce pressure on the ankle bones.
Regarding the heel, adidas has also made significant changes here. In these new adidas X Speedflow boots, we find a separate heel panel that has been stitched onto the rest of the boot. This panel is woven on the outside, like the rest of the upper, but on the inside there is a non-slip material which, combined with an aggressive external heel counter, will secure the foot to the boot in such a way that you’ll experience a level of support rarely found in football boots on the market.
Finally, we come to the outsole, and it’s no coincidence that we’ve left this until last, as the plate on these new adidas X SpeedFlow is exactly the same as the one on the previous adidas X Ghosted. Laminated studs help maintain balance during high-speed movements, and an internal carbon fibre plate provides extra responsiveness when needed. All this, combined with an external heel counter, makes this a perfect sole for what the adidas X user requires. Although it lacks functionality, we’d like to highlight the great work adidas has done with the chrome finishes we’ve been seeing on all their + models. Do we know they’ll fade over time? Of course. But that impression they make when you see the boots for the first time is sensational.
Technical features: adidas X Speedflow
An upper made almost entirely from Primeknit, a stretchy, lightweight material that also provides a snug, comfortable fit that few other boots on the market can match. The shell features Agilitycage technology, which consists of internal cables designed to provide stability in the most demanding situations, such as turns at top speed, sprints and braking. In the sole, we again find the CARBITEX SPEEDFRAME, which efficiently transfers power via the revolutionary and dynamic carbon fibre plate within the lightweight SpeedFrame construction.
That wraps up our round-up of all the new features in the latest adidas X SpeedFlow – a new generation of the German brand’s speed boot range that we’ll soon be seeing on pitches all over the world. What’s more, these adidas X SpeedFlow boots will feature a new player whom we’ve been keen to see back in a pure speed boot. Can you guess who it might be?
