This new Puma jersey for the Italian national team marks a new milestone and, at the same time, showcases the German brand’s creativity as it strives to consolidate its position in the world of football. With the EURO 2020 qualifiers in full swing, Puma is capitalising on the Italian national team’s excellent form to unveil a kit bearing the slogan ‘NEW WAVE’. This move also coincides with the much-needed generational change within the Italian squad.
New Italian National Team jersey: the Renaissance Kit
The Renaissance Kit celebrates the arrival of a new generation of Italian talent, both on and off the pitch. A crop of young footballers who bring a breath of fresh air that the national team has long needed. A jersey that draws on a design from the Italian national team’s historical archives and presents it to a new generation. This jersey is by no means a novelty in the history of the Italian national team. In December 1954, during a match against Argentina at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, the Italian players wore the green ‘maglia’ for the first time. Subsequently, the FIGC used this colour in youth team matches throughout the 1950s, as a trial period before making the leap to the senior national team and donning Italy’s traditional blue kit.
In terms of design, the jersey features an all-over print inspired by the ornamental motifs and tailoring techniques of the Renaissance period. It is a design that pays tribute to Italy’s culture and history, linking its past with the present and the future.
