Let’s start by talking about Jadon Sancho’s football boots – a pair of Nike Mercurials designed exclusively for the English player, who in recent years has proved himself to be one of the world’s most promising young talents. He is a footballer who perfectly embodies modern football: a fast-paced, technical and highly creative game. That’s why the American brand wanted to present the Borussia Dortmund star with a special gift: boots that tell a story, full of references to his childhood and to English culture. The boots are a riot of colour and detail, though the main colours are blue, sky blue, red and white, a nod to the English flag. There are also several details inspired by English pubs, such as the phrase ‘Poppin 24 Hours’. The word ‘Vibez’ and the player’s surname, ‘Sancho’, also appear repeatedly. Another really fun detail is a small bottle typical of English sauces bearing Sancho’s name – a personal touch that makes the boot even more special. Technologically speaking, they remain the same Mercurial boots as always, albeit with a slight modification: the upper is slightly stiffer at the player’s own request.
We now turn to a pair of boots that are quite similar in concept, design and history, and we’re talking about the boots of the world’s best footballer: Messi’s boots. We’ve already discussed them previously on the blog and in videos, but they’re well worth a closer look again because they’re spectacular boots that tell the story of Leo Messi. If we look closely at all the details, we find references to the number 10’s most important moments: the word ‘Barcelona’, the number 10, and Messi’s birthplace, Rosario. His famous celebration with his fingers pointing skywards. His personal logo. And many other details relating to his career. These boots have so much personality that they almost seem more like a collector’s item than boots to be worn in a match. Technologically, they haven’t changed; they’re still the familiar adidas Nemeziz boots we’ve seen in other colourways.
We finish with Mbappé’s boots – surely the ones with the fewest visual details, but perhaps the ones that tell the most special story. These Mercurials represent the French player’s childhood and his first steps in football. We see classic pink Mercurials, combined with white and silver details, creating a truly spectacular boot. But the most important thing lies in the story behind them. These Mercurials are inspired by the boots worn by Ribéry in 2008, one of young Kylian Mbappé’s idols. The young French player dreamt of having the same boots as his favourite footballer, but his family could only afford to buy them for him after great financial sacrifice and on one condition: that Mbappé got good marks. And so he did. Young Kylian achieved his good marks and was finally able to play football in the boots he’d longed for so much. That’s why Nike wanted to pay this tribute to the French World Cup winner: to show today’s young players that with effort, hard work and perseverance, any dream can come true.
