These are the best laceless boots

The Umbro Medusae III are, without a doubt, the lightest football boots in this selection. Much of this is down to their sole, which is extremely light and flexible, providing a great sense of freedom with every movement. Perhaps because they are part of the Umbro range, or due to their design with no visible seams, many players do not give them the attention they truly deserve. However, those who dismiss them for that reason are missing out on one of the most interesting options on the market. Their main strength lies in the upper, made from natural leather and featuring a laceless design. The absence of laces and seams in the area that makes contact with the ball provides a cleaner, more uniform surface, improving the feel when controlling, receiving and striking the ball. Furthermore, this range is usually available at a very competitive price. The only slight drawback is that the outsole offers a very high level of flexibility, which some players may find excessive.

They were one of the German brand’s major releases for 2020 and quickly became one of the most popular boots amongst players worldwide. Retaining the signature laceless design, adidas completely redesigned its iconic control boot to deliver a model far more focused on maximising contact with the ball. The incorporation of Demonskin technology across much of the upper provides greater grip on the ball, enhancing control, passing accuracy and a better feel with every touch. Although it isn’t one of the lightest boots on the market, it does incorporate key performance features, such as the external heel counter, which provides extra stability during changes of direction, when planting your foot and during the most demanding moments of the game.

It is the only Nike football boot featured in this selection and, strictly speaking, cannot be considered a purely laceless boot, as it does feature laces. However, its Ghost Laces system conceals them completely, creating a much cleaner contact surface with the ball and offering a feel very similar to that of a laceless boot. This second generation earned its place on this list thanks to the significant evolution it underwent compared to its predecessor. Nike refined its design to deliver a much more comfortable boot, with a lower profile, a sleeker silhouette and a superior fit. Furthermore, its Flyknit upper construction offers excellent ball-feel, making it one of the standout models of its generation for players who prioritise control and comfort.

The Italian brand Lotto already impressed players around the world last summer. With this new generation of the Solista, the Italian firm has taken a significant step forward in the development of its laceless football boot concept. Its upper, made entirely from Knit, offers a very comfortable fit and excellent ball feel thanks to its 100% laceless construction. Furthermore, Ankle Fit technology provides firm support around the ankle, improving the fit and taking comfort to the next level.

We round off this selection with another adidas model, which comes as no surprise given that it was the German brand that revived the laceless concept in 2016 and, since then, has continued to refine it and incorporate it into some of its most iconic ranges. The adidas X 19+ round off this list, proving that a speed boot can also evolve without losing its essence. The revamped construction of its upper, now slightly wider, means it fits a greater number of players better, especially those who previously found the fit too narrow. From a personal point of view, the adidas X 19+ are the laceless boots that best suit the shape of the foot, particularly due to their greater width and the extra space they offer for a high instep. However, in terms of comfort, they are still a step behind other adidas ranges, such as the Predator, which offer a superior level of comfort.
