Yesterday saw the conclusion of the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals, with Guardiola’s City securing a win at the Parc des Princes and Chelsea picking up a precious point at Valdebebas. Let’s take a look at some of the interesting moments the players provided during these Champions League semi-finals!
Neymar Jr
The first player we’re looking at today is Ney, PSG’s number 10, who has been wearing some very interesting boots for the past few days. We’d already seen him wearing a different pair of Puma Futures in the league match, a special edition made just for him. Last night, too, the Brazilian took to the pitch in a slightly different pair of Puma Future Zs. The base is Puma’s latest colourway, namely the Spectra Pack, but with one notable detail. We can see the figure of a character. Many will have wondered what it was and who it was, whilst many others already knew. For those who weren’t aware of the news, what we see on Neymar’s boots is his avatar from the video game Fortnite, a very interesting collaboration that brings a player’s skin to the game for the first time.
Vinicius Jr
Another Brazilian, but this time we’re talking about Real Madrid’s rising star, Vinicius Jr, who seems destined to become one of Nike’s most important players. Vini’s case is quite curious, as we saw him wearing a pair of Mercurial Dream Speed boots. You’re all probably wondering: why is it a curious case? Well, because against Betis in the league, he played in the Mercurial Silver Safari boots, a boot designed for Nike players competing in the Champions League knockout stages. In fact, most of the Nike players who have played in the European Cup semi-finals and who wear Mercurials wore the Silver Safari colourway. We’re not quite sure why he made that decision; perhaps it was Nike who wanted to make the young Brazilian stand out more from the rest of the players—who knows? What do you think was the reason?
Kimpembe
Another curious case is that of the PSG and France centre-back. The French player has been wearing an older pair of Mercurials for some time now – specifically, a pair of Nike Mercurial Vapor 13s, which is the generation before the current one. We’re not quite sure why; perhaps it’s superstition – who knows. All we know is that he doesn’t want to part with his Mercurials. The colourway we see is the one that was intended for Nike players during the EURO: the Neighbourhood Pack, a colourway featuring details of the neighbourhoods where 2021 EURO will be played.
