Today, Puma has unveiled its now-classic pack, which gives the German brand’s models a black finish. Many of us eagerly await this colour scheme, as it makes the boot look classic, elegant and not too flashy. And it is precisely for this reason that we love these packs so much; they feature football boots that go against the grain of current fashion trends – that is to say, super-flashy boots in very bright colours. With this Eclipse Pack, Puma is delighting fans of single-colour boots, but above all winning over those who, like me, love all-black football boots.
In this pack, we see both of Puma’s current models rendered in black: the Puma Ultra speed silo and the more explosive Puma Future Z. Obviously, these are models that won’t feature heavily on the pitch, so we’re unlikely to see them on the feet of players sponsored by the German brand, such as Griezmann or Neymar.
PUMA ECLIPSE PACK
Let’s take this opportunity to take another look at the two models together, reviewing their technologies and innovations, and seeing how this new colourway looks on these boots.
PUMA FUTURE Z
Let’s start with the innovative Puma Future, Neymar’s new football boot. This is clearly a generational shift, as we’re looking at a boot that has evolved significantly and features major changes compared to previous models. Let’s begin with the upper, constructed from a very lightweight and stretchy knit called Evoknit Pro. In the central part of the boot, in the instep area, we find the first innovation: a new technology designed specifically for Neymar. As you know, the Brazilian has unfortunately suffered many injuries in recent years, particularly in the ankle area, which has become one of his weak points. To protect this weak spot of PSG’s number ten, Puma has incorporated a compression band called FuzionFit+, which locks and stabilises the foot inside the boot, thereby reducing the likelihood of injury. We also find Grip Control Pro, an ultra-thin layer of gel that enhances grip in whatever conditions the player is playing in: rain, snow or wind. We finish with the revolutionary Z-shaped sole to provide that extra bit of lightness.
We must say that we love the look of this boot in black; we think it makes for a much more aggressive and elegant boot compared to those we’ve seen so far.
PUMA ULTRA
Let’s now talk about Puma’s speed boot, worn by countless champions such as France’s Griezmann and Italian football legend Gigi Buffon. This time, we’ll start by giving you our thoughts on the new colourway of this boot. We must say we like it, but it’s very similar to the Puma Game On Pack, so it’s not as surprising or innovative as the Future. Speaking of technologies, we can’t help but start with the upper, which is entirely synthetic, featuring extremely thin and waterproof materials such as Kevlar. Puma refers to this area and these materials as MatrixEvo Technology. We also see Grip Control Pro on this model, although it’s much less prominent this time; in fact, it’s only incorporated in the forefoot area of the boot. We finish with an FG/AG outsole inspired by running shoes.
