Snow, rain and strong winds have characterised the first few days of 2021. Over the past two weeks, temperatures have dropped dramatically and inclement weather has taken centre stage. However, the weather hasn’t dampened our enthusiasm for getting back on the pitch or our love of football, so today we’ll be sharing our top picks for the best gear to keep training whilst braving the cold.
GLOVES
Without a doubt, hands are one of the body parts most exposed to the cold, which is why it is so important to protect them with suitable, technologically advanced gloves. In fact, it is essential to use accessories designed specifically for this sport, as they incorporate technologies that conventional gloves do not offer. The material is very important; in this case, we believe it is vital to use neoprene or synthetic gloves to prevent external elements such as water or wind from coming into contact with the hands and thus protect them completely. Another very important aspect is the palm. If we’re playing a match, we should use gloves with gel in the palm to provide grip, allowing us to hold the ball more securely during throw-ins and prevent it from slipping away. Of course, you can find this type of glove from various brands such as Nike or adidas.
THERMAL APPAREL
There is no doubt that the upper body is one of the areas we need to protect the most, especially the torso, arms and abdomen. We can do this by wearing thermal tops, which will protect us from the cold and keep us warm at all times. What’s more, they provide that feeling of compression that so many players love, and, lastly, they protect us from grazes and falls.
The same applies to the legs which, although they will suffer less from the cold due to constant movement, can also be protected with thermal clothing. Here we have two options: long-sleeved, recommended especially for goalkeepers, although not exclusively for them, or short-sleeved.
WINDBREAKERS
It’s not just the cold that can bother us during a workout, but also the rain and wind. So how can we protect ourselves from these elements? Well, it’s very simple: with a windbreaker or a lightweight rain jacket, which will undoubtedly be a great help. Their main purpose is precisely to protect us from the wind and rain, as they are made from waterproof materials. We can use them in two different ways: in the event of rain, wear them as the outer layer; but if it’s very windy, our advice is to wear them under a sweatshirt to stop the cold getting in and thus maintain a perfect body temperature.
SOCKS
Feet are the part of the body that suffers most from the cold. If they aren’t properly protected, the cold eventually gets the better of us. So our advice is to always carry two pairs of socks in your sports bag and, on very cold days, wear one pair on top of the other.
What can we do to improve grip inside football boots using socks or tights? Without a doubt, an excellent option is to use grip socks or tights, which have gel in the sole and provide much better grip inside the boot.
