Virtual and real-life football are becoming increasingly intertwined. These days, it’s rare to find a football club that doesn’t have a counterpart in the world of esports, and the players themselves are showing an interest in these video games, even organising tournaments and competing against one another.
The German brand adidas has chosen to mark the launch of FIFA 22, the world’s most popular football video game, by paying tribute to it with a collection of football boots. Eye-catching, vibrant colours inspired by the moment you open a player pack in the game, with the animation featuring coloured lights. Hence, all these striking shades adorning the uppers of the three adidas silos.
Let’s continue discussing the design of this new adidas pack, which references the number 99 – the number featured on the upper of the German brand’s three main ranges. Why 99? We’ll explain. In FIFA 22, the maximum rating a footballer can achieve is 99, which is why each of the adidas football boot models has that number printed on the upper, accompanied by a statistic that represents the footballer wearing that boot.
We’ll start by looking at each model individually, and the first one will be the adidas X Speedflow. We’ve already discussed the design and inspiration behind this new adidas pack, so we’ll simply highlight which attribute takes centre stage in each model. In the X Speedflow, as you’d expect, the 99 is attributed to pace, which is the statistic that represents a player’s acceleration and top speed in the video game.
We already know that the new adidas X Speedflow are lightweight, minimalist boots designed for players who need to reach high speeds on the pitch, so we think adidas has made an excellent choice in highlighting this feature in these football boots.
We’re continuing our look at the new adidas NumbersUp Pack, and now we turn to the Copa Sense. The German brand’s leather boots are perhaps the most eye-catching in this collection, and it’s hard to go unnoticed when fluorescent yellow is the main colour of this model. A modernised leather boot, designed for the player who is constantly in contact with the ball – a description that fits perfectly with adidas’ decision to give this boot a passing rating of 99. The player who wears the adidas Copa Sense football boots is usually a footballer who controls the game and constantly links up with his teammates, so it wasn’t hard to guess which attribute would be maximised in these adidas Copa Sense boots.
Finally, we’ll be looking at the adidas Predator Freak. What will the ‘99’ stat be for this model from the German brand? It’s hard to say, as the Predator is adidas’ all-round boot, not designed for any specific type of player.
For this reason, the Germans decided that a 99 rating wasn’t enough for the adidas Predator Freak football boots, and have maximised both shooting and dribbling. We don’t think that’s a bad thing, as the Predator Freak is a model that caters to a wide range of players, and it’s no surprise that players with completely different styles feel comfortable in adidas’s flagship boots.
That’s all for now on the new adidas collection, bringing together real and virtual football in a pair of football boots that are now available on the Fútbol Emotion website.
Nineties nostalgia is back with a combination of the new adidas Predator boots and the signature 90s aesthetic of adidas EQT. These luxurious boots are going to be thoroughly analysed.
