New in: adidas Copa Sense+

The German brand is once again unveiling a new generation of one of its signature boots. This launch isn’t just a minor update, as we saw with the previous generation. It represents a significant leap forward in innovation and a bold move for this magnificent boot. Just as it did with the launch of the first generation of its ‘classic’ boot, adidas is once again leaving the world speechless. Welcome to Copa 2021, welcome to Copa Sense+.

The new adidas football boots are no secret. It’s been a while since it was considered a secret to see the football boot being unveiled on the very day of its launch. Regardless of this, it’s a day of celebration for us, as the new adidas Copa Sense+ embodies two very clear concepts, fused into a single idea. Given all that this entails, adidas remains firmly committed to laceless boots, and this commitment means that, for the third time, we see the classic Copa range undergo a radical transformation in its fifth iteration. The only thing classic about it now is the name, as the adidas Copa Sense+ returns, laceless and featuring a fantastic leather upper. Let’s take a closer look.

The concept and philosophy behind these football boots stem from a blend of ideas. A philosophy that remains consistent in this fifth iteration of the German brand’s ‘classic’ boot. That subtle touch of classicism is by no means at odds with what we see today in the most modern boots on the market; in fact, adidas considers it essential. Many of us will agree on this point. The legendary Copa Mundial football boot is undoubtedly the foundation upon which the brand with the three stripes sought to combine the effectiveness of this iconic design with a laceless football boot. As we always say, it’s the small details that make a huge difference.

If we take a closer look at the new upper of the adidas boot, the first thing to note is that it is, once again, a fusion. And how! In this 2021 version, we see ‘wave’-like shapes wrapping around the foot. This design confirms that the underlying aim is, without a doubt, to improve foot-to-boot ergonomics. The upper is made from premium kangaroo leather, known as K-Leather, with a softness rarely seen in a boot fresh out of the box. Thanks to its elasticity, it requires hardly any wear to mould to the shape of our feet, not to mention the ball touch, which is quite simply sensational.

As with most modern leather boots, there are no visible seams on the upper; this is achieved thanks to the FUSIONSKIN technology chassis, which allows for a transition from natural leather to Primeknit that is imperceptible to the naked eye, whilst also providing the boot with greater overall stability. The knitted section around the ankle makes it easier to slip the foot in thanks to its stretch. A new feature here is a small cut-out, which makes it easier to slip the foot into the boot.

One of the key points that adidas emphasises, as we have mentioned, is ergonomics. Within ergonomics, there is a key aspect: comfort, combined with the Look-Down philosophy. New ‘Pods’ integrated into the heel of the new Copa Sense+ will ensure that effectiveness on the pitch. Boots that hug your foot perfectly, fitting like a glove and feeling like a second skin – something we’re all increasingly looking for. On this occasion, we see an extremely low collar that extends up to the instep, but thanks to its elasticity, it won’t get in the way. Finally, regarding the upper, as is customary with the brand of the three stripes, the entire upper has been covered with a synthetic layer that protects the leather, waterproofs the boot and extends its lifespan.

Adidas has also introduced the SENSEFRAME plate, a polyamide compound that maintains a soft flex in the two central studs—a feature that appeals to most players—and, together with two strategically placed zones, distributes the pressure from the studs across the entire surface to prevent discomfort. The studs are no longer conical, as their design now features a slightly more aggressive shape to provide extra traction.

As is customary, the German brand is also launching a premium version of the Copa Sense, this time with laces, which is sure to delight those who love leather boots but haven’t quite dared to try – or feel comfortable in – the laceless version.
