To review these two models, we’ll compare three key aspects of each: fit and comfort, feel or impact, and traction or grip on the course. By comparing these three key aspects, we’re sure to help you decide which of the two best suits your game.
Comfort
To compare the two models, we need to look at their construction; both are made from knit fabric and designed to give us that extra edge on the pitch. Both knits are excellent, highly adaptable and flexible, but they do have their differences. The Flyknit on the Nike Phantom GT is much thinner and allows for a quicker fit and break-in; in other words, it takes fewer wears to make the football boot feel like ‘your own’.
However, the Primeknit on the adidas Predator Freak is considerably thicker, giving a sturdier feel as well as greater protection. So, in this respect, the Phantom GT is perhaps thinner and more flexible, whilst the Freak is slightly thicker and more robust.
So which ones are more comfortable? Straight out of the box, the Phantom GTs are likely to be more comfortable thanks to their softer Flyknit upper, whereas with the Predator Freaks, you’ll need to wear them in a few times first. Ultimately, friends, it’s a matter of personal preference.
Feel
This is perhaps the most crucial aspect of this type of boot, as it is where each model focuses its design and where we see the essence of each one. In the case of the adidas Predator Freak, we have the well-known “Demonskin”, which in this version extends across the entire upper, including the central area, making it the standout feature of this adidas football boot.
The truth is that this new ‘Predator element’ really makes a difference on rainy days, because the ball simply doesn’t slip as much. As for the Nike Phantom GT, we have the Generative Texture, which takes a similar approach to the Predator by incorporating these elements, but in a much more subtle way. The inserts are much finer and blend more naturally into the upper. So, both offer enhanced striking and touch, but from two different angles: if you want a sturdier boot with powerful striking support, the Predator Freak is undoubtedly the right choice. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a slightly more natural touch that hugs the foot, the Phantom GTs are better suited to this style of shooting.
Sole and grip
And we come to the final section, looking at the outsoles. For the Phantom GT, we have a semi-modular outsole with tri-claw lugs and truly aggressive traction, designed for quick turns and changes of direction, and which is highly responsive.
From Predator Freak, we have a slightly more stable deck with tri-spiked studs that aren’t quite as aggressive as those on the Phantom. It’s a modular deck that distributes the contact points across more areas, allowing for ease of movement in any direction.
Both soles are excellent, with the Nike Phantom GT offering more aggressive traction.
In conclusion, we have two boots that are absolutely top-notch, so which one should you choose? Well, if you’re looking for a slightly lighter boot that hugs the foot, and for anyone who finds the Mercurial last a bit too narrow, the Nike Phantom GT is the one for you. If, on the other hand, you want a sturdier boot with reinforced striking zones and the option of a laceless design, the adidas Predator Freak is undoubtedly the one for you. Which would you choose?
