Differences between Nike Mercurial Vapor 14 and Nike Air Zoom Mercurial

With the new release of the Nike Air Zoom Mercurial, we have a new model, so we are going to compare it with the previous version. Let's get started.

Firstly, in this post we are not going to review each of the technologies, as previous posts and videos already provide all the necessary information about each of the models. That is why we have gone out onto the pitch to carry out different exercises to assess how both boots feel and compare exactly what the differences between them are.

Once we have completed a training circuit combining traction, driving and shooting, we will be able to better assess each aspect of the boots and conclude how the new model from the American brand changes speed.

Nike Mercurial

Let's start with the fit. We should mention that the previous generation is somewhat tighter and narrower, whereas the new model has a much more standard fit, which means that even those with slightly wider feet (without being extreme) will be able to enjoy wearing Mercurials.

When it comes to traction, the new Air Zoom Mercurial boots have a slightly less aggressive grip, as the studs are less ‘arrow-shaped’ and, with all the zoom technology, you don't get that same feeling of ‘sticking’ that you did with the previous generation. This is a matter of taste. If you want maximum aggressive traction, you might prefer the Vapor 14. On the other hand, without compromising on aggressive traction, the new Air Zoom offers more versatile grip and the added comfort of the ‘air’ unit.

Focusing on another fundamental aspect that changes this boot significantly is the upper, which has a higher material load and is also somewhat padded. This is something we have rarely seen in Mercurial, but it fits like a glove, giving us much more comfortable dribbling and shooting, with more grip but without losing any of the precision and feel for the ball that this silo is known for.

In summary, Nike Mercurial has changed. We now have a boot that is more comfortable overall and features innovative technology that is noticeable and provides extra comfort in a silo that sometimes fell short in this regard. We also have better grip and a more pleasant feel with the ball. However, that essence of a pure speed boot is somewhat diminished, and perhaps for those who want that hardcore feel, the previous generation is still a great alternative. Also on an aesthetic level, we prefer the new Nike Air Zoom Mercurial. Which one do you prefer?
