Leo Messi's boots
In 2017, the German brand launched this new agile boot design, one of the Argentine star’s key characteristics. The boot was designed with the concept of a functional support bandage in mind, as seen in boxing or ballet – sports in which joints are bandaged to provide greater support and enable greater agility and speed in every movement.
This boot utilised the Agilitybandage, which lived up to its name by wrapping the foot 360 degrees, offering one of the best fits on the market. It was a revolutionary boot, marking the end of the old Messi boots and introducing this new concept that was a huge hit with everyone who tried it. The touch with the laceless version was fantastic, and the medium-traction sole fitted perfectly with that style of play involving constant changes of direction and turns at top speed – a perfect boot for Messi.
2018 arrived and the first update to the boot was released, retaining the core concept of the lacing system – as if strips were wrapping around the foot – but with slight changes. The material at the toe box has been softened to provide a lighter feel when touching the ball, and the height of the collar has been increased to prevent the uncomfortable pressure point on the heel that was occasionally felt in the previous version.
Finally, an internal mesh has been added to improve comfort inside the boot, and the sole – which was very well received thanks to the Torsionframe system – remains unchanged. This new version, with only minor changes, was an improvement on the previous model but didn’t quite win everyone over, as the new forefoot had less grip than the first version, which could be a problem in wet conditions.
Agility football boots
In 2019, they introduced another change, this time a more radical one, featuring an Agilitybandage that completely wrapped around the heel and a new modular outsole that made changing direction even easier, unleashing the full agility of the players.
The fit is no longer contoured from the sides, but is now designed from the centre, thereby improving the fit of the foot within the boot and the feeling of support during changes of direction. The boot’s look is simply stunning and is complemented by subtle changes on the inside, with silicone inserts at the heel, an internal mesh lining for improved comfort, and new semi-conical studs on the sole. A full-blown evolution that laid the foundations for the current model of the adidas Nemeziz football boots.
In 2020, there wasn’t as significant a change as in previous versions, but an essential aspect of the Nemeziz boots was improved. Grip had been a point of criticism for this model, so the German brand incorporated a textured layer into the synthetic upper, both on the front and the sides.
This improved a key aspect of the boot whilst retaining the rest of a boot that many professionals love for its comfort and fit.
And that concludes the evolution of the adidas Nemeziz football boots, a brief history in football boot terms that has produced some great moments on the feet of its greatest exponent, Leo Messi. With the arrival of ‘the return’, we saw Messi, for the first time, wearing completely new boots; now we can only wait to find out what the recent Copa América champion’s next boots will be.
