This new Chelsea FC home jersey will be seen in action next Saturday, when the Stamford Bridge side play in the FA Cup final, and again a few days later in the UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City. As for the story behind the jersey’s boldest design yet, both the English club and Nike have opted to put a fresh spin on the traditional home kit design.
Thus, we have a jersey in which blue is once again the dominant colour, but this time accompanied by a zigzag pattern combined with a similar checkered print on the left shoulder. According to the London club’s marketing department, this more eye-catching design is inspired by the OP ART movement, a trend from the 1970s that explored optical illusions with the aim of capturing the attention of younger fans.
A new jersey that clearly reflects the English club’s commitment to establishing this new footballing ethos. The Blues’ new home kit is made from 100% recycled polyester.
It features a brighter shade of blue that dominates the entire jersey, with only a few details – such as the Nike Swoosh, the letters ‘CFC’ on the back and the edge of the Chelsea crest – appearing in a more intense shade of yellow. Furthermore, this jersey has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind, as Nike has been using recycled polyester in the manufacture of football kits since 2010.
