Leather review: adidas Copa vs Nike Tiempo

We’re back for a proper showdown, as we’re going to compare the signature boots from the biggest names in the world of football. Who will come out on top?

To compare these boots, we will look at three key aspects that we believe are what people look for in a modern natural leather football boot: comfort, leather quality, and touch. We will examine each aspect of these boots in detail and see where each one excels

The best leather football boots

Comfort

Let’s start with one of the key aspects of football boots: comfort. In this case, we have two completely different approaches in these boots. Looking at the Nike Tiempo football boots, we have an upper that combines natural leather with synthetic microfibre at the back. This combination is brought together by Quadfit, a technology inherited from the previous Nike Phantom VSN, which extends across the entire upper and takes away some of the feel of leather but gives us a sensational fit.

The new adidas Copa Sense+ features a combination of knit and genuine leather, used in a smaller proportion than in previous Copa models, and includes padding to secure the foot to the base and provide a greater sense of comfort.

At this point, the truth is that no single boot stands out as the clear winner, as many people love the fit of the Copa Sense+, but depending on your foot type, you might be better off opting for the laced version. With the Nike Tiempo Legend 8, the fit is more universal, as there is no laceless version; and although you lose some of the feel of the leather, the fact is that in terms of comfort, it won’t disappoint anyone.

Leather type

Both football boots are modern versions of natural leather boots, as they combine different materials, with leather featured on the front. However, it is worth noting that the leather section on the Tiempo is considerably larger, extending up to the upper part, whereas the Copa Sense+ focuses on the toe area.

Both leathers are of the highest quality and exceptionally soft; however, the leather on the adidas Copa Sense+ is less traditional in the sense that it remains soft with almost no need for treatment with grease or creams, which is truly surprising.

As for Tiempo, their leather is a bit more traditional in that sense, as it does require some maintenance, and features a diamond-patterned texture that provides extra grip, although the leather itself is already fantastic. Both leathers are great, but perhaps the fact that the American brand’s boots feature a larger proportion of leather gives them the edge when it comes to the material.

Touch

This point is perhaps difficult to pinpoint when it comes to leather boots, as in both cases the feel or sensation when striking the ball is simply unrivalled. However, there are certain details that will help us decide between one boot or the other.

From Nike, we have a more classic design, featuring a boot with plenty of leather detailing and the grip you’d expect from a top-quality boot. If we had to find a minor fault, the inner QuadFit lining detracts slightly from the leather feel and gives the boot a sturdier upper—something some people like but others don’t; we suppose it’s a matter of taste.

When it comes to Joao Felix’s football boots, we have a much more modern feel; the lack of laces gives us a clean striking surface for the ball. It’s a less structured, more minimalist feel, bolstered by the padding – something we’ll appreciate for inside passes and shots with the inside of the foot. However, although the feel is fantastic, it’s less traditional due to the boot’s construction itself.

On this point, there is no clear winner, as if we want a slightly more modern touch that is closer to today’s boots, the Copa will be the choice. If, on the other hand, we prefer a slightly more classic and structured touch, the Nike Tiempo are better suited to that.

And here is a comparison of two leading boots in the world of modern natural leather boots. The truth is that there is no clear winner, but we can certainly see many differences. If you’re looking for a leather boot with perfect touch, good grip and, above all, very light weight, the Nike Tiempo is the best choice, weighing in at around 180g and offering an incredible feel. On the other hand, if what we want is a modern, laceless boot with reinforced touch zones and a more stable grip that’s ideal for turns, the adidas Copa Sense+ is the one for us.

Now the choice is yours. Which do you prefer?
