Last night saw the conclusion of the third matchday of the Champions League, featuring goals, unexpected results and some truly, truly unusual football boots. In today’s post, we’re going to take a look at the players who’ve been wearing boots that are different from those worn by the rest. From special-edition football boots to exclusive models and boots from previous seasons, this Champions League matchday has brought us some major surprises. Let’s discover them together.
Leo Messi
We start with the PSG forward who, as well as scoring his first Champions League goal for the Parisians, showed the world his stunning X Speedflow.1 boots. The model Leo is wearing won’t be seen on any other player’s feet, as it’s an exclusive colourway for the PSG striker. The colourway in question is from the Numbersup pack, inspired by FIFA, the most famous football video game of all time. All the models in this pack feature the number 99 on the upper, but the only one with the number 100 (the highest number you can have in FIFA) is Messi’s.
Marco Reus
Marco Reus has become a regular feature in this section. The Borussia captain hasn’t decided to switch football boots and remains loyal to his Puma Future 5.1 from the Rise Pack, launched in the summer of 2020. You read that right: summer 2020. So he’s been wearing these boots for over a year. It’s true that during this time he’s tried out the new models, but none have convinced him to switch.
Benzema
Champions League nights are his favourite, and for such occasions, you have to look your absolute best. The German brand adidas has decided that Karim Benzema should wear some truly special boots for Champions League nights: a pair of F50s in a colourway inspired by the aforementioned competition. However, something rather curious happened. During the first half, the French striker played in the special edition boots, but in the second half he decided to switch and put on the current X Speedflow.1. Why do you think he did that? Let us know in the comments!
Dumfries
The Dutch winger has already settled into Inzaghi’s team and is beginning to show his full potential. Now that we’re seeing him more on the pitch, we’ve noticed he’s still wearing the X Ghosted.1, the previous model of the X. Everything seemed normal until he took to the field against Sheriff. During the Champions League match, he played, as usual, in his X Ghosted boots, but they were painted black, concealing them and making them almost unrecognisable.
Gravenberch
We finish with the Ajax midfielder, who took to the pitch wearing a pair of football boots that we might today describe as ‘retro football boots’. For many, they’ll be a fond memory; for others, they’re boots that take us back to our childhood – and that’s certainly the case for us. But we all agree that they’re among the most acclaimed adidas boots in history. Who can guess which ones they are? Leave your thoughts in the comments! ⚽
