We’ve seen various commemorative jerseys for significant years, and even jerseys that replicate special designs from the clubs’ glory days. But now let’s take a look at those jerseys that have managed to capture the essence of the past whilst incorporating modern materials and styles.
Chelsea FC Third kit
We’ll start with Chelsea and their third kit, which is inspired by the classic 90s design we saw on the ‘Bridge’ team. The collar is very much in the Nike 90s style – a design we saw on the Italy kit and on Borussia Dortmund’s own kit.
This time round, the jersey is reminiscent of the London club’s legendary kit from the 94/96 seasons, with that orange collar – a detail retained in the current kit. It’s clearly blended with the black more typical of the 2000s, resulting in a kit that captures the essence of 90s Chelsea without compromising on the look and feel of today – well done.
Arsenal Away kit
With adidas returning as the ‘Gunners’ official kit supplier, one of the club’s most iconic away kits has been brought back – none other than the ‘bruised banana’ design, which captivated all Arsenal fans back in the 1990s.
The 2019 jersey captures the essence of the original by bringing back those dark brown stripes – reminiscent of a ripe banana – and updating it with a much more contemporary collar and sleeves. The fit is slimmer and not as oversized as the 1990s kit, but the look and design make the Arsenal jersey one of the best retro ones of the season.
PSG Third kit
We’re sticking with the 90s and a Nike jersey that has literally broken the mould this year. On this occasion, the Paris team is unveiling an all-white jersey, but with a polo-style collar and blue and red stripes, thus retaining the club’s signature colours.
The inspiration comes from the 89/90 season jersey, when the Parisians wore a jersey that was virtually identical to this year’s. The Nike logo, also taken from the 90s, rounds off a stunning look, making the PSG kit one of the best of the year.
Atlético de Madrid Third kit
We continue with another Nike third kit, and it is none other than Atlético de Madrid’s third kit. This one sees the return of the hybrid V-neck and round neckline, which reveals the Nike logo and is steeped in the aesthetic of the 90s in every detail. The bluish colour is not new to the club’s kits, but with this design, the nod to the early 90s is clear.
It’s very reminiscent of the shirts from the early 90s, with the legendary Marseille advert and clear nods to Neptune – one of those retro kits we’re lucky enough to still have.
Futbol Club Barcelona Third kit
And we’ll finish with one of the most acclaimed jerseys of the moment – none other than FC Barcelona’s third kit, which takes us back to the days when Ronaldo Nazario played for the Catalan side.
The current jersey is inspired by the legendary kit from the 95/96 season, which featured a very similar design, with the collar standing out particularly – as was the case with all the jerseys from that era – and a turquoise blue pattern featuring various geometric shapes and spectacular details. The 2019 jersey faithfully captures the essence of those jersey and gives the Blaugrana team a sensational retro look.
A special mention for Manchester City
I couldn’t finish this post without giving a special mention to Manchester City’s 125th-anniversary jersey, which, although it’s a special edition and isn’t part of Manchester City’s official kit range, was one of the best-looking designs we’ve seen this year and left us speechless when we first saw it on the pitch.
The Puma jersey was inspired by the Citizens’ home kit and celebrated the 125th anniversary of the club’s founding. A stunning, groundbreaking design that reminded us just how beautiful and simple our favourite sport can be.
And that brings us to some of the best retro kits available to buy right now in 2019 from the Futbol Emotion store – perfect for reminiscing about a favourite era for many, reliving childhood memories for others, or simply rocking a retro look whilst supporting our team.
