We must say that the approach taken by Nike Football with the launch of these new boots has been spot on. The Nike Phantom Vision, despite being one of our favourites, and the Phantom Venom – an essential boot for some of the deadliest strikers on the planet – failed to win over either the general public or many of the elite footballers sponsored by the American brand.
With this in mind, Nike presents the new Nike Phantom GT, boots designed specifically for players who aren’t afraid to keep the ball at their feet. According to the brand itself, the Phantom GT is the boot range whose development has involved the most data analysis in Nike’s history. At the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL), aspects such as the different angles and intensities at which the ball makes contact with the boots and leaves the player’s foot were studied.
Nike Phantom GT - Generative Texture
Creating these boots was no easy task, as merging two lines as different as the Phantom Vision and the Phantom Venom presented a major challenge. The aim was to find that key element Nike was looking for in a new boot, without compromising on innovation or simply reviving elements and technologies from the past that would prove truly appealing and effective for modern football. The final design of the Phantom GT (Generative Texture) combines digital data from both the VSN and the VNM, whilst also incorporating some of the most iconic details from previous ranges. The result is a boot with a more precise touch and feel on the ball, designed to maximise the player’s creativity.
Phantom GT upper
The first thing you notice, and what stands out most about the design and construction of this boot, is the positioning of the laces. The lacing system on these boots has been moved to the outside – a feature previously seen on the original Total 90 boots – to provide an even larger contact area with the ball.
After two years of research and development, Nike’s design team has succeeded in defining a series of specific patterns, heights and angles to shape the upper of these boots. All the textures applied have been carefully studied to achieve a balance: neither too bulky a design nor excessively pronounced grip.
By integrating these textures directly into the upper using a high-end material such as Nike Flyknit, the result is a boot that feels incredibly soft, offers great flexibility and is also lightweight, making for a particularly light pair of boots.
Phantom GT sole
The sole and studs on these boots are completely new. However, if we may make an observation, the design clearly seems to be inspired by the sole of the old Total 90 boots. In any case, this new Nike Hyperquick system features a chassis with different types of studs.
In the heel area, there is a stiffer structure featuring two tapered studs at the tip, providing excellent support during quick changes of direction. There are also laminated studs running the length of the sole, which improve stability and traction on the pitch. This stud pattern is particularly well-suited to this type of boot and reinforces Nike’s commitment to a range designed for agility.
And here are the new Nike Phantom GTs. Remember that they’re available now in the Elite range at Fútbol Emotion, and that the other ranges will be available from the 6th of August.
